Hi folks,
It’s March, historically my least favorite month.
I mean listen: M-A-R-C-H. Like soldiers, or disobedient children being sent to their rooms. Or like you’ve got to go do something you’d rather not.
I’d rather not do March. I’m waiting for fresh April or balmy May or sultry June, or my favorite, shimmery July.
March in the northern hemisphere means more harsh weather after an already long winter. It requires patience and fortitude.
March means taxes in the USA. This year, rather than the hefty refund we had expected, we had a nasty surprise tax bill—thanks to the criminal incompetence of our broken FOR-PROFIT health insurance scamsystem. While sick people go untreated, I get to pay a $5000 bill for a necessary “service” that I’ve never used.
But we’re here and the show must go on. And while I need to sit through the end of that drama, there is another show that is much more exciting...
The Broadmoor Art Experience
Steve and I are thrilled to be invited to participate as guest artists in the Broadmoor Art Experience, a plein air event that takes place each year in the sprawling gardens of this famous historic hotel in Colorado Springs, hosted by Broadmoor Galleries, one of the most established art galleries in the state.
We’ll be there on Saturday and Sunday July 5-6, painting in the garden. More details coming soon.
Winds of Change
One good thing about March is the spring equinox and a fresh new beginning. On a personal note, I finally sold my Denver condo that has been on the market for nearly a year - so the winds of change are afoot.
This temporary home served an important purpose for the past five years - I spent a peaceful and protected lock-down here, developed my art, made tons of friends in the artist community while living there...and met the love of my life. We’ll now regroup at my husband’s place in Lakewood and figure out our next steps.
Love and Art are our guiding lights.
New Art of Awakening Blog
I’m celebrating the season of new growth with a new way of publishing: the blog I started in 2008 has morphed into the Art of Awakening publication on Substack.
Each Sunday I post a new article, in a loosely scheduled rhythm.
I love reading—so much that I used to write book reviews for the Boulder Weekly newspaper. So in the new version of my blog, I’m going to share my favorite book recommendations. This month I share a review of two powerful books about the role of women in the arts and society, including a theory that Shakespeare was actually a woman writing under an allonym.
Another regular feature in this new publication is a monthly sneak-peek into the creative process, and how to keep inspiration fresh. Julia Cameron (of The Artist’s Way) recommends Artist Dates, and this important practice helps keep creativity fluid and evolving. Read about our recent artist date to Santa Fe here.
There is also a monthly exploration of tools for training the mind and managing the stressors that sabotage a healthy mindset. I recently attended a fabulous seminar where Eastern contemplative practices met Western neuroscience, on transforming stress into opportunity.
Upcoming Exhibit
I’m busy preparing a new series of work for the upcoming Artburst Studios “Reflect” exhibit, an online group exhibit June 19-21, 2025. If you want to participate, make sure to be on the guest list, head to their website and sign up.
The Creative Incubator
Starting on April 29th, each month on the final Tuesday, for paid subscribers, we’ll gather together for an hour of creative incubation. I’ll supply a guided practice to get the right mindset, and then we’ll venture into creative prompts: journaling, but also other exercises to get the creative juices flowing.
Even if you don’t identify as an artist, you are co-creating your life. This program is designed to help you focus on what is important to you, and to develop practices to give it your full attention.
This is how I start my week off with clarity and focus about the projects that are important to me.
Life and responsibilities can so easily sneak in and take time from the things that really matter. Whether it’s making art, writing, tuning in to our intuition to discover our next steps, if we don’t prioritize and schedule the things that are important to us, they risk getting consumed by the daily tasks (or distractions) that can sap our energy.
By identifying and committing to routines, we set our intentions and follow up with action. If you’d like support in creating your own daily habits, consider upgrading to a paid subscription to join us for these monthly sessions.
Thanks for your interest in my work and for reading this far. Please reach out if I can help you find a piece to bring peace to your home.
As a thank you for being part of my community, I’ve created a 30% discount code for all ink drawings. To use this, select any drawing from the ink drawing gallery, and use the code DRAWING30 at checkout.
Be well.
with love,
Kim
